An idea specifically for ladies

By | Weekly Tip | No Comments

Ladies, this one is for you! Blow dryers, small barrel curling irons, large barrel curling irons, skinny flat irons, wide flat irons, curling wands, blow dryer diffusers and other miscellaneous attachments… So many hair tools!! And where to keep them all so they’re easy to grab when you need them? Well here’s one cool idea I saw recently. Use a magazine holder (like the one pictured below) as a holder for some of your hair tools. Flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons will all fit easily in to one magazine holder. If needed, a second one can be used for even more organization (multiple curling irons in one and multiple flat irons in the other). Blow dryer attachments can be stored easily in a small bin under the sink in the bathroom or in your bedroom, out-of-the-way. Easy to grab and easy to put back. That’s one of the main keys to staying organized.

A post of remorse

By | Weekly Tip | 2 Comments

Well, for me, this tip comes too late. When I was in the midst of my recent “closet purge mode”, I had a couple of big candles I didn’t know what to do with now that I had burned them all the way down to the end of the wick. Since I was in my “purge mode” and not in my “be creative and organized mode”, I pitched them. Eeek! I know I know, some of you are freaking out right now. Please don’t judge me and please keep reading. In the future, I’ll totally know what to do with them. Just keep reading so you won’t fall in to this bitter waste land either.

Here’s what I should have done and here’s what you can do too: put the used candle in the freeze and leave it in there until the wax is frozen (this can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours – obviously the less wax the better and faster). Unlike water, wax constricts when frozen. Once the wax is completely frozen take it out of the candle holder (this can be done with a butter knife). You may need to clean off some residue that will be left behind by either scraping it with the knife, washing it with soap and warm water or, if you have it, with baby oil.

Now here’s the cool part – once the candle holders are wax-free and dry you can use them as jars for your vanity! They’re great decorative storage for cotton balls, q-tips, decorative soap, etc. Or you can pour some glass balls in it and create a holder for your make-up brushes, tooth brushes, lip liners and eye liners, etc. Or (I’m on a roll now!) maybe there’s something else you can put in there. Use them as candy dishes when guests come over, or to hold loose change, the extra buttons that come with dress shirts, safety pins, hair pins, bracelets, elastic hair bands, barrettes, rings…. Seriously, there’s a lot you can do with empty candle holders… And now that I’m writing all this out and thinking through what I could have used them for I’m deeply regretting the two I threw away… *Sigh I need to buy more candles.

Not all organizing ideas come from Pinterest

By | Weekly Tip | No Comments

I was recently in a home where I was once again impressed with an organizing idea, and it’s another one I haven’t seen while perusing Pinterest or using Google Image Search (the first time this happened was when I saw this).

Anyways, the homeowner had taken an old 6 pack container, wrote “Bug Spray” on it and put all of her bug spray bottles in it. She kept it simple and used a sharpie but you can get as creative and artsy as you want with this project. The best thing about it? Easy containment! And cheap too, since she used an item she already owned (which is what I love to do when organizing).

When I expressed my excitement over her awesome organizing idea, she opened another cupboard and brought down another 6 pack container. This one said “Car cleaners” on it and she had put all of the smaller car cleaning bottles in it. Both 6 packs slid easily into her cupboards and she didn’t have to worry about hunting all over just to find the correct bug spray or car cleaner. This a great, cheap, easy way to bring some organization in to your life.
